About Sardar Patel
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an Indian National Congress leader – until his death. Many historians like Ramchandra Guha, thinks it is ironic that Sardar Patel is being claimed by the BJP when he “was himself a lifelong Congressman”. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor alleged that BJP was trying to ‘hijack’ the legacy of freedom fighters and national heroes like Patel as they have no leaders of their own in history to celebrate.
Many opposition leaders see vested interests in the right-wing party’s effort to appropriate Sardar Patel and depict the Nehru family in a bad light. Built at a cost of Rs. 2,989 crore, the statue depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister, wearing a traditional dhoti and shawl, towering over the Narmada River. At 182-metre, the statue is touted as the World’s Tallest Statue – it is 177 feet higher than China’s Spring Temple Buddha, currently the world’s tallest statue. Iron was collected from all over the country for the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, also known as the Iron Man of India.

About Statue Of Unity
Design & Architect
The Statue of Unity has been designed by renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar. Sutar was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2016 and Padma Shri in 1999 for his valuable contribution in the field of art. Sutar has designed more than 50 sculptures in his career all over the world including the statue of Mahatma Gandhi inside the Parliament complex. Depicting Sardar Patel wearing a traditional dhoti and shawl, towering over the mighty Narmada river, looking out towards the world as a commanding yet humble, unfazed, and unafraid leader.
Construction
The statue is a structural system consisting of two semi-elliptical reinforced concrete cores. It also has a reinforced concrete podium that acts as a base for the statue clad in bronze, supported by structural steelwork fixed on to the concrete cores. About 21,0000 m3 of concrete, 18,500 tonnes of reinforcement, 6500 tonnes of structural steel, and 1800 tonnes of bronze were utilized for the construction of the statue. It took 13 months for the design process and the actual construction was completed in just 33 months. The construction of the Statue of Unity was completed in 2018. Total cost of the statue of unity is around 3000 crore.
Farmers Contributions
Sardar Patel was called Loh Purush or Iron Man of India, because he stood strong and did not bow in to any kind of pressure in the way of Uniting Bharat. He always respects farmers and always with them when the British government harasses them. Sardar Patel was Loh Purush (Iron Man) and individual farmers also willing to contribute to the statue of unity. That’s why Narendra Modi offers farmers to contribute to the statue of unity by using farmer’s iron pieces into the statue of unity. Modi then made clear that it is not any piece of iron that he is seeking but a piece of iron from the farm equipment that has been used by the farmer in a village. This was collected from all over the country during the period 31st October 2013 to 26th January 2014.
The Challenges
Natural factors like wind and earthquakes posed stiff challenges. Situated right in the middle of the river Narmada, the statue is exposed to the tunnel effect of winds blowing down the river. Studies of wind patterns over the years revealed wind speeds of 39 m per second (roughly translated into 130 km/hr. ) could buffet the statue in a worst-case scenario. To arrest any sway of such a tall structure, two Tuned Mass Dampers of 250 tonnes each have been used. In any given situation, all the four corners of the base raft remain rooted to the ground.
Completion
After the hard work of 3300 people constantly for about 33 months, spending around 3000 crore, using 180,000 cu. m. of cement concrete, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, 6,500 tonnes of structured steel, 1,700 tonnes of bronze and 1,850 tonnes of bronze cladding, The world’s tallest statue with the height of 182 meter is standing near river narmada facing side at sardar sarovar dam. The inaugural ceremony was held on 31 October 2018 (143rd birth anniversary of Vallabhbhai Patel), and was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
